No More Junk in the Trunk

I’ll admit it, my primary focus when it comes to design is for something to look amazing. I only worry about the technical details after I get something looking right and if a page loads a little slower so that my images can appear nice and crisp, well, so be it… At least that is what I used to think. Now it is critical for your website to run efficiently and as a designer my job is to not only give your users the best experience, I must also make sure your website moves like a gazelle. Images should be small and a total page should be less than 3MB, but really it needs to be below 1MB! A high resolution banner image can easily be 500KB and so with just one image you may have already used up most of your page size. So what do you do? You use tools to help you figure out what is keeping your site from running smoothly.

Hubspot’s Website Grader

One of our favorite tools is Hubspot’s Website Grader. is an amazing resource for website marketing. If you haven’t checked it out lately, you need to, it is the boss when it comes to web tools. Their free website grader tool is located here: you just plug in your website and hit enter and it brings back a grade for your site and then tells you how to improve it. Currently ChemistCreative has a website grade of 79, but we would like it to be much higher. Our page requests are too high and we need to install a browser caching plugin such as WP Super Cache.

Google PageSpeed Insights

Another nifty tool is Google PageSpeed Insights. This tool will also tell you how well your site is performing and what you can do to improve it.

Image Compression

You got lots of pictures on your site? Well, they may need to be smushed. WP Smush is a great free WordPress Plugin that will go in and compress your images without a loss in quality or you can use one of the tools below.
