Is your website saying too much? Are you telling a story or just pushing a bunch of features and data at your potential customers?

We recently met with one of our clients who for years has wanted to be sure and list all of the things that they do in a snapshot on their website. The website homepage looked like a dashboard of options and it was laid out nice and clean, but you could not tell what they did within 5 seconds of viewing their site.

Does your website pass the grunt test?

  1. What do you sell?
  2. How will it make my life better?
  3. What do I need to get it?

Human beings at the core are all very similar. WE UNDERSTAND SIMPLE.

Your website should tell a clear message in just a few seconds. Something like: We Paint Houses. We Clean Floors. We Fix Windows. Cook Like a Pro. Those are all simple phrases that even a 5 year old could understand.

As I was listening to the Story Brand podcast I had all these lightbulbs coming on in my brain. I was trying too hard to tell too much even on my own website and when dealing with my clients I often just interpreted their ideas using my creativity instead of trying to help them tell a clear story of what they do.
